The latest Kongsheng harmonica to join the Sonnyboy's stable is the Mars M2 (Red). This model also comes in all-over 'gold' and black finish, but I preferred the look of the red/chrome contrast of this model.
It features the same popular 'Mars' style, with the same reed plates, but these are fitted to an aluminium comb. So how much difference does that make?
Certainly it makes the harmonica heavier, weighing in at 113g, as opposed to the original Mars weight of 79g (both C harps). Kongsheng claim that it is fractionally more airtight, making it easier to play.
As it is based around the original Mars, it has the same round holes and smooth finish with rounded 'corners', and none of the sharp edges that can occasionally be found on some of the other Chinese brands. In short it is a pleasure to play.
In practice I am struggling to find a suitable descriptive word to explain the difference between the sound of this aluminium comb and the standard ABS comb of the original - but there is a difference, even my ears can hear! It almost has a slight extra solidity - maybe a slightly 'deeper' sound, which sounds great to me. Maybe when I have played it a bit more I will come back and try and explain it better!
In the meantime, if you like the smooth finish of the original Mars, and you like a harp that feels really solid in the hands, then this may be worth a try.
