Why, why, why do JDR choose the names Ninja and Assassin (and a few more of similar style) for their harmonicas I do not know!

But moving on....

Following the success of the Trochilus and Assassin models here at Sonnyboy's, I have decided to add another of JDR's Diatonic harmonicas to my stock.

JDR have shown by example the quality of their manufacturing in their other models, so I thought it was time to look at a lower priced model to see how it compares. It's black finish and round holes, along with a smooth, rounded body shape is immediately obvious, but then you start to notice the little attention to detail.

The scalloped ends to the harmonica, to make it slightly easier - and more comfortable - to hold, and the indentation and 'wrinkles' in the cover plates, to aid grip. I'm not sure I would ever have thought they were important, but they do seem a positive step in harmonica design (and yes, I understand many seasoned players will be raising their eyebrows at that...).

I think those small tweaks do suggest a company that cares about the playing experience, and that is born through with the sound, which is reasonably loud (although not the loudest) and with a great tone. It certainly feels pretty airtight and responsive to my ears, although I would not claim to be an expert or anything close to one. I could certainly bend the bottom end OK, and the top end wasn't too squeaky even in my hands!

I understand that some dislike the black finish on harmonicas, but to my lips this felt 'normal', unlike some which seemed to have an unusual taste/texture. Between the lips it is quite large (similar to the Assassin, or some Seydel models). I have tried to measure the height where it goes between the lips, and while it is a bit of a challenge to do it accurately, as a rough guide, I measure a Hohner Special 20 at approx 18mm, an Easttop T008K at 19mm and the Ninja at 21mm.

I find it comfortable to play initially, but only a longer time 'living' with it will tell - and of course we are all different, with different preferences, so what is good for me could be unplayable for you....

But at the end of the day, surely if you've managed to stick with me this far, it has to be worth a look - what is going to give you more pleasure - Twenty litres of unleaded or a shiny new harmonica?!
